As the nights grow longer and darkness looms, the only thing more shadowy than the winter is our collective reality.
Terrorizing ICE raids
Gut-punching grief
Deep canyons of loneliness
Soaring inflation
A broken U.S. healthcare system that somehow got more broken
A plague of powerlessness
We’ve been conditioned to believe that the divine is not with us, especially when the shadows loom large. White patriarchy wants to keep us hopeless and disconnected from our power, so it teaches us that the divine is only found in the light – in certainty, clarity, and the complete absence of pain or struggle. Not surprisingly, when we are in trouble, we often spiral into illusions of divine abandonment and stop earnestly looking for the divine.
But the Black Madonna’s radiantly dark body tells a different, infinitely hopeful story: that if we seek the divine in the shadows, she will find us and illuminate our way. Even more, it is precisely in the shadows that we discover that her infinite Blackness contains all things, has seen all things, has survived all things, and has relentlessly generated life in the midst of all things. Since she cannot be intimidated, overwhelmed, outmaneuvered, or subdued, her radiant darkness bursts into our shadows to accompany us, empower us, and illuminate our way.
As the cherished children of the ancient Black Madonna, it is our birthright to experience freedom, guidance, and hope in the “dark-skinned Holy Woman who is never afraid of the dark.”* in her radiant darkness. On December 7, join us as we circle around the Black Madonna’s radiant darkness. Through inspired teaching, embodied practice, and community conversation, we will uncover and banish illusions of divine abandonment, clothe ourselves in the Black Madonna’s radiant darkness, and experience freedom, guidance, and hope as we navigate this shadowy season.
